That’s where we need to be careful as we listen the words from Amos. But we are also admonished as Christians to care for the poor. Even Jesus said the poor would always be with us. We hear about the middle class disappearing and it’s becoming more difficult to make ends meet for families. We hear every day about how the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. We can even sell the chaff we sweep up as grain.”” Listen to these words from the prophet Amos.Ĥ Listen to this, you who trample on the needyĥ Who ask, “When will the new moon festival be doneĪnd the counterweight heavier to cheat our customers.Īnd the poor and their property for the price of a pair of sandals. The readings yesterday could come from the newscast today without a problem. I’m amazed at how the lectionary grabs today’s news even though the scriptures were chosen years ago.
